SPRING LOVE

The work is generally quite pleasing to eye in terms of composition and where the eye is led. A solid grounded understanding of lighting and shadow in the natural world is clearly used in application of where to forgo realism in lieu of style and impact.

The softer pale background of paints mixed on-canvas compliment the technique very well by unifying the flowing mix of colour on the flowers themselves. However they do seem to muddy and clash near the top right hand.

There is a wonderful richness to the deep orange tinted yellow that makes the body of the petals and this is again complimented greatly by the technique of using the pallet knife. In terms of pure aesthetics the lavender and ocher overtones give a feeling of depth while remaining simple and fresh. The impact may have been boldened by perhaps adding a yellow of greater saturation such as Cadmium to serve as a highlight rather than tinting the base with white.

While flowers are of course a staple of still life painting an extra half point is well deserved for originality as it has no retention of emulation, approached wholly as an expression of the artists taste and mood.
